What makes the perfect japanese bowl of soup? For me it takes a weighty voluptuous noodle, not to soft and not too hard, a delicious flavoursome broth, rich and deep yet light and joyful. Add to this loads of fresh seafood, vegetables and big dose of loving attention to presentation and you get the picture. That’s why I LOVE Yumenoki.

caramel slices at the Orangery London

What a surprise to have the lovely Marion call today and suggest cake at the Orangery in Kensington Gardens. I haven’t been there for years, mainly due to the dreary long queues out the front door and lethargic service. Somehow, today it seemed time to try again, and we were not disappointed, despite the 30 minute wait for a table. This Caramel slice, Coffee and walnut , or Belgian Chocolate were my big decision….

Scone with west country clotted cream

Hurrah! It’s a warm Saturday, so I hop on the train to Bath Spa to steam and soak in the thermal waters which gives me the mighty appetite. A proper English tea with scones and cream is in order. The Pump Room in the old Roman Baths is the place to go.

Melbourne cakes…

Ah, brings tears to my eyes. Acland St cakes at Monarch cake shop. Ok, they are not as good as they used to be back int he 60s, but they are still tremendously satisfying to window shop. Without doubt the baked Polish cheese cake in the foreground is my favourite, though it does not in anyway compare to my mothers.
